Each pidgin has its own norms of usage which must be learned for proficiency in the pidgin. Not all simplified or “broken” forms of a language ( patois) are pidgins. Pidgins usually have low prestige with respect to other languages. A pidgin may be built from words, sounds, or body language from multiple other languages and cultures. A pidgin is not the native language of any speech community, but is instead learned as a second language. Fundamentally, a pidgin is a simplified means of linguistic communication, as is constructed impromptu, or by convention, between groups of people. It is most commonly employed in situations such as trade, or where both groups speak languages different from the language of the country in which they reside (but where there is no common language between the groups). Sooooooooo where does it come from? Apparently it originated in Nigeria…that’s what I’ve been told anyway.Ī pidgin (pronounced /ˈpɪdʒɪn/) language is a simplified language that develops as a means of communication between two or more groups that do not have a language in common. But worse than those two, is Liberian Pidgin – if you are lucky you may hear that they are speaking English!

I still don’t understand a lot of expressions in Nigerian pidgin, but I’ve gotten used to it for the most part. If I ever thought Ghanaian pidgin English was hard to understand, this country’s own was on some next level! Supposedly people from Warri speak it the heaviest. I had finally gotten the hang of Pidgin English in Ghana…….and then I went to Nigeria.

It didn’t too long to understand this kind of English, although I still hear a few expressions that I must ask what it means. It’s really not that difficult to understand – basically it’s broken English, like Patoi which is spoken in the Carribean. I remember when I was preparing to come to Ghana for the first time – my friend warned me that I would be hearing people say “Oh Chale” a lot! I was like what in the world is that!?!? Pidgin English.
